Get Served with the Ultimate Ping Pong Table
Ping pong: An enjoyable and beloved past time, a thrilling competitive game, and so much more. However, this fun-spirited game is not nearly as worthwhile if you’re not playing on the right type of table. Playing on a table that isn’t up to par with your skills, or simply isn’t of high quality at all, can quickly become frustrating and suck all the enjoyment out of ping pong.
To make sure you are getting the most out of your ping pong experience, it’s best to do your research before investing in a ping pong table. Not only that, but when you do that research, you need to know what exactly you’re looking at and the right factors to consider. Some things that you may have never thought would matter can actually have a significant impact on your experience in using the ping pong table.
Ping pong table is a great game to play casually with friends, kids, family, and more. It’s a great way to keep the entertainment going and keep people engaged at things like parties and other gatherings in your home. It’s fun for everyone!
At the same time, it is something that many people choose to invest their time in professionally. Those looking to hone their skills in professional ping pong need to make sure that they’re doing so with an adequate table. For one thing, the table needs to be of high quality and be able to cope with your increasing skills. At the same time, though, another important consideration is that it needs to resemble in form and function the tables that are used in competitions and other professional settings. This way, you won’t be thrown off your game or need to contend with a learning curve when switching one table to another, such as from the table you use and practice on at home to the table you use when competing.
As you can see, there are a lot of different things you need to keep in mind when selecting the right ping pong table for you. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all ping pong table. It all depends on your preferences and intentions with your future ping pong table. The perfect model for you may differ drastically from that of another person looking for something different in their piece of ping pong equipment.
How to Choose the Best Ping Pong Table
As we have already discussed, a lot of factors go into making sure that the ping pong table you pick adequately suits your preference. Make sure you’re considering the important points before you get too invested in a single ping pong table and decide it’s the one that you want to buy. From size, to skill level, to where exactly you will be using your ping pong table, you have a lot of things to consider!
Purchasing a ping pong table is no small investment. Don’t waste your time and money buying a ping pong table that isn’t going to adequately suit your needs. Believe it or not, you’ll save more time and money in the long run by doing your research first and making sure that a model is the best available option for you before you hit the “checkout” button.
To pick the best ping pong table, we recommend that you first familiarize yourself with the most important criteria to consider. Once you know these things, when you look at a specific ping pong table, you should be able to rank it on all the criteria. You’ll be able to get an accurate and educated view on how well it would suit you and your purposes. In this way, too, it can be much easier to objectively compare different ping pong table models.
There may be other criteria aside from what is listed here that you will find it important to consider. However, these are the categories that we find most critical and most useful on which to judge a ping pong table before making your purchase decision.
The size of your ping pong table is going to be more important than you might realize. For one thing, it comes down to preference. For instance, some people prefer a smaller playing field to make for a more relaxing, casual game of ping pong. In that case, you are going to naturally prefer a smaller ping pong table. On the other hand, some people play ping pong to really get the blood moving and to get their exercise in, which means they require a larger playing surface. In those instances, we recommend that you opt for a larger ping pong table.
You should also consider continuity. If you play on a table at a friend’s house and decide that you love ping pong so much that you need a table of your own, then you might want to ask them what size their table is. If you’re consistently playing on a table of a particular size, you will become accustomed to the amount of power and pressure necessary behind each hit. If that status quo is altered by something like the size of the table, it could really throw you off your game. In the same line of thinking, if you are wanting to play professionally, make sure that your practice sessions take place on a table the of the same size as the one you are going to use when competing.
The ITTF has dictated that the size of an official ping pong table should be a rectangle of 2.74m long by 1.525m wide. This converts to approximately 9 by 5 feet. The tabletop should be 76cm above the floor and have a level surface. Granted, you might come across tables of varying sizes. However, if you want to go with the standard (especially for those playing professionally), then this is the type of table you should look for.
The amount of space that you have available is likely also going to be a huge factor. If you have room for a ping pong table when you are actually using it, but can’t really stand to have one out all the time because it disrupts the living space, then this needs to be considered in your search. If this is the case, you’ll want to opt for a table that can be easily made compact and stored away.
On the other hand, if you want to play ping pong a lot and have plenty of available space for your new table, then feel free to display it prominently! If it’s not as important to hide your table away when you’re not using it, the compact nature of a table may not matter. In fact, you may prefer a table that isn’t compact. Those that are meant to be permanent fixtures in a room often have a better, more stylish look. Especially if you are training to go pro, you may prefer a ping pong table with better style while showing off your ping pong finesse and skills.
Indoor vs Outdoor
Do you have a nice screened porch outdoors that is just begging to be occupied by a ping pong table? Or do you love the feel of being outdoors? Perhaps you want to be able to set up a ping pong table in your front or back yard? Maybe by the pool? There are a lot of benefits for the outdoorsman when it comes to playing ping pong outdoors, but there are a few important things you must keep in mind before you purchase an outdoor table.
The wind can interfere quite significantly with your gameplay, and you won’t want to play on rainy days. So, ask yourself how many calm, dry days you see in your area. Is it often enough to be able to satisfy your ping pong desires? Also, remember, competitive ping pong is played on indoor tables. If you want to play competitively without needing to contend with a learning curve, then an indoor table may be best for you.
Outdoor tables tend to be sturdier, made from concrete or galvanized steel undercarriages. This allows the table to hold up against wind. Playing surfaces also need to be weatherproof to avoid warping from the sun as well as water damage from rain. As a result, outdoor tables tend to cost more than their indoor counterparts.
At the end of the day, there’s nothing wrong with getting an outdoor table if that’s what you want! However, you should be willing to accept that the table should be kept outdoors at all times. As such, it’s unlikely to last as long as an indoor ping pong table due to exposure to the elements. It also will cost more.
Importance of Thickness
The thickness of the surface of your ping pong table is something that should be considered a lot more than it is. The thickness and material contribute greatly to a table’s quality of bounce. The quality of bounce is something that the ITTF takes into consideration very highly, and so should you! If you want a good bounce from your table (which you should) then you should seek a table with a higher thickness. It’s often associated with price, so if a cheaper table is important to you, then you will likely be settling for a thinner table.
Manufacturers such as the JOOLA line tend to provide high-quality tables for the value they offer. However, they are cheaper tables and do come with a lower thickness, such as around 5/8”. While these are great tables and still provide a reasonable bounce, it’s not the same bounce you’d expect from a table used in a tournament. For tables used in tournaments or of a similar level of quality, you should expect a surface thickness of greater than ¾”. Having one in your home could come with a significantly higher price tag, though.
You probably already know how price factors into the equation without us having to tell you. As with any product, the more you are willing to pay, the higher quality you are going to be able to get. If you are on a smaller budget, then you may have to settle for less and make decisions about what you can and can’t do without from your new ping pong table.
If you’re looking for the ideal ping pong table while trying to save money, it’s a good idea to prioritize the most important features of your ping pong table and focus on those. You may not be able to tick off all your boxes, but as long as you can tick off the most important ones, you should be happy with the ping pong table you choose.
Fortunately, when it comes to ping pong tables, some value options do exist. These come at a lower price point and some sacrifices do come with that. But most importantly, you are still able to find a relatively high-quality ping pong table for a lower price. Especially for casual use, you should be able to find a ping pong table that suits the needs of you and your family perfectly well with one of the cheaper options available on the market.
Whether or not this feature is important to you should depend mostly on whether or not you plan on moving your ping pong table. If it’s intended to be a permanent fixture in your home, then it’s not so essential that you prioritize finding a ping pong table that is foldable. On the other hand, if the space in your home is limited, that’s another story. If you plan on only taking out the ping pong table when it’s actually in use because it takes up too much space during other activities in your home, then it’s all but a requirement that the ping pong table you choose must be foldable.
Foldable ping pong tables are much easier to make compact and transport to other places. With a foldable table, you can easily and conveniently store it when not in use. You can also bring it with you to other places to share an exciting game of ping pong with friends. A foldable table is also easiest to take it outside to enjoy a quick game in the great outdoors. Whatever the reason, having a foldable ping pong table is highly convenient.
You want to make sure that the legs on the ping pong table you choose are sturdy and reliable. Remember, the legs are the only thing holding up the table. If they fail and the table falls, that could result in serious injury. Ensure that the legs are well-constructed, durable, and made from a high-quality material before purchasing your new ping pong table.
That’s not the only thing you need to take into consideration, though. If you are leaning towards an outdoor ping pong table, then you also want to make sure the legs are capable of providing you with a sturdy surface. As you may be faring with all different types of terrain outdoors, the legs of your ping pong table should be able to conform to the ground beneath them for best results. Some outdoor ping pong tables are designed to do just that – and some are not. Make sure you look into this if that’s an important aspect to you before purchasing an outdoor ping pong table.
Do you care what your ping pong table looks like? Maybe not. A lot of ping pong players are concerned solely with performance and functionality – and there’s nothing wrong with that! As long as the ping pong table gets the job done right, that’s what matters. The appearance of your ping pong table especially shouldn’t matter if you are going to be folding it up for storage immediately after use.
However, if you’re planning on having a ping pong table as a more permanent fixture in your home, then you may care more about what it looks like. Think about the colors of the ping pong table, it’s design, and its overall appearance. While to many, this wouldn’t be something they’d think about at all, others find this to be a very important consideration. It’s best to be honest with yourself about whether or not the appearance of your ping pong table is important to you. If it is, be careful not to purchase one that you would hate looking at on family night when you’re all playing on it together!
Playback refers to the ability to be able to play on a ping pong table by yourself. Half of the table folder upwards to create a “wall.” A single player can hit the ball for as long as they like, while the wall keeps sending it back. This is a great feature for those who are practicing to become better players, or to enter into tournaments. This allows them to get all the practice they want without being at the mercy of others, asking them to play as the second player.
Having a playback feature on a ping pong table is incredibly useful to help someone in honing their skills. It can also be great for when they often don’t have someone else to pay ping pong with them. However, for those looking to just use a ping pong table to play with their family, for get-togethers, game nights, etc. – a playback feature likely isn’t as big of a consideration. Your goals and intentions with your ping pong table should help you to determine whether this feature is a significant factor for you in your ping pong table search.
Believe it or not, your skill level is relevant to the table you choose to buy. While a value table with a lower thickness will work just fine for some family fun or casual playing with friends, it’s not as well suited to someone looking to go pro. A professional table will have a better bounce quality. This means that when someone who has been practicing on a beginner table competes on a professional one, they might find themselves significantly thrown off their game. This sort of learning curve is not the kind of thing you want to contend with at the moment your ping pong tournament starts!
There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a beginner ping pong table – if you are a beginner. It’s also a great option for casual players. However, professionals should shy away from those and make sure that they’re looking for something of higher quality. This ensures their game is continuous from when they are practicing at home to the moment their tournament starts and throughout the competitive game.
What the Pros Use
We’ve discussed a little bit about what a pro should expect in a tournament setting throughout this article. However, here’s an in-depth look at what you should look for if you want to use the same type of table that the pros use.
For one thing, pros typically play on indoor tables with a surface thickness of over 3/4”. They play on indoor tables because indoor tables tend to be of better quality – even at the same price point.
Remember, the surface thickness of the table impacts the bounce that it provides. With that in mind, it makes sense why the pros would only opt for a thicker ping pong table. A thick table gives them the best results. A thicker ping pong table, for this reason, signifies that it is of a higher class of quality.
The materials used by the manufacturer also have a significant impact on the table’s performance and are therefore considered seriously. For this reason, you’ll want to keep in mind the materials used and make sure that they are of high-quality if you want to play on a table like the pros!
Narrowing Down the Decision
Now it’s time to start narrowing down your decision! With the above criteria in mind, you should be able to come to an educated decision on whether or not a ping pong table is the right choice for you and your home.
The following are some of our favorite ping pong tables on the market today. Hopefully they will help you to narrow down your decision and find the right high-quality ping pong table to purchase!
